Fried Oyster and Kimchi on Rice... Ode to Japanese Manga Oishinbo

Manga comics are widespread in Japan with its unique genre in a broad range of subjects enjoyed by the young and old alike. During my visits to Japan, it was commonplace to see people head down, zoned in their manga books on the subway and while eating solo at quick serve restaurants. And of course, the subject of food is not spared... Oishinbo (translates to "The Gourmet") is one of the best selling and most beloved manga of all time- a fascinating, addictive journey through the world of cooking and food culture! This particular edition compiled into bite-size chunks of stories is on Izakaya: Japanese Pub Food. As I was being entertained through the comical yet serious meticulous food details, I came across this fabulous fried oyster and kimchi on rice dish that I just had to make! I thought, wouldn't it be fun to share the story and just a few photos and tips as the pages cover the recipe steps already. What do you think? Oh, remember to read the frames from right to left!

Okay, I did not use fresh shucked oysters (flash-frozen is very good) or homemade kimchi, but the prepared ingredients I had did the job!

Oishi!! Just like the manga detailed on the distinct tasty flavours! Now let's eat- Itadakimasu!
I garnished the bowl with chopped onion chives grown in my friend's backyard. Adds a fresh touch!

Some TIPS to recipe success:
* Thaw frozen oysters by rinsing several times in cold water.
* Wash oysters by adding a tsp. cornstarch and some salt to toss gently to rid of excess debris. Rinse two times and drain well.
* Pat the oysters dry before dredging in flour individually. I like to combine 1/2 flour and 1/2 potato flour for crispness.
* Make sure the oil is hot before adding the oysters. It should cook in a few minutes. Drain oil on paper-towel lined plate.
* Kimchi can be salty, so use a low sodium soy sauce for the oyster dipping sauce and just dip lightly.

If you like the combination of kimchi and oyster on rice, give my Kimchi Oyster Fried Rice Mix-up a try... so much fun for the kids as they get to mix in their own toppings!
